Higher than the Mighty Waves

A little testimony from Psalm 93, by Grace Chen.

A few weeks ago, I was feeling really, really stressed out and turned to the word of God. I began praying through the psalms, and by no coincidence, God led me to Psalm 93: “The floods have lifted up, O Lord, The floods have lifted up their voice; The floods lift up their waves. The Lord on high is mightier Than the noise of many waters, Than the mighty waves of the sea” (verses 3-4).

As I was praying, the Lord opened my eyes (Psalm 19:8, 119:18), to understand this passage of Scripture in a whole new light. The stress I was battling was exactly like the overwhelming floods and tempestuous waves of Psalm 93! And just as in Psalm 93, the Lord is higher and mightier than every challenge I have faced, am facing, and will face in the future.

As Psalm 29:10-11 says, “The Lord sat enthroned at the Flood, And the Lord sits as King forever. The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace.” Through these psalms, the Lord helped me to see that He is sovereign – He sat enthroned at the Flood, and still sits as King today. I can keep my eyes focused on the Lord God Almighty, for He reigns far above all the distractions and challenges of this world.

No matter what I go through the Lord will never leave me nor forsake me: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you . . . “ (Isaiah 43:1b-2a). No storm is too strong and no wave is too high for God. Even when “the floods lift up their waves, The Lord on high is mightier Than the noise of many waters, Than the mighty waves of the sea.”

So, for those of you who are reading this, if you are facing difficulties in your life, know that the Lord will be with you, guide you, and carry you through. And even if life seems to be comfortable and smooth – that in itself is a huge challenge, as I find myself forgetting God the most when life seems to be “going well.” But no matter how life may be going for you at the moment, know that the Lord will always hold us by the hand, counsel us, fill us with strength, and afterward, receive us up to Him in glory, as He promised in His word (Psalm 73:23-26). God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, and He is always there for us whenever we come before Him in prayer!

“2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies. 4 The pangs of death surrounded me, And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. 5 The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry came before Him, even to His ears . . . 16 He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. 17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, For they were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the Lord was my support. 19 He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.”-Psalm 18:2-6,16-19
